Kids Learning to Cook Makes for Healthy Lives Ahead
During September Kidliga has been partnering with Function
Junction to offer some really fun Kid Chefs Cooking Classes. We wanted to do this for a number of reasons. First
and foremost we saw an opportunity to provide kids with a hands on experience
to cook healthy and kid-friendly recipes. There are currently so few classes
available specifically tailored to kids that focus on healthy options.
In offering the classes we also wanted to highlight the
importance of children eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle during September,
as it is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Statistics show 1 in 3 kids
in the US are growing up overweight or obese. The American Heart Association
recently published a study that shows 90% of all children in the United States have a poor diet which is contributing
to the growth of obesity, heart disease and diabetes in our young.
Getting kids to cook is the best possible way to combat poor
diets, obesity and other diseases. The best part about it is its fun, it allows
kids to have more control over their own health and it adds to their life
There are many recent articles that have highlighted the benefits of children learning how to cook. These include the practical application of
math and chemistry as they measure and mix and following instructions for a
recipe from the beginning to the end. It is a terrific way to learn to try new
things and to feel empowered because children can own the recipes they learn
and share them with others. It makes for great family time spent in the kitchen
cooperatively. Instead of everyone sitting in front of the TV focused on a
show, it is time where conversation can occur and not just about preparing a
meal. Having children help cook in the kitchen sets family priorities of eating
healthy, home prepared meals and sharing the responsibility of meal
There is tremendous benefit in choosing healthy recipes and
talking about what makes them healthy from the fresh ingredients to the
nutrients they offer to the calories of a given recipe. Cooking with kids can
be a great place to talk about why healthy eating is important and what the
difference is between healthy foods and not so healthy ones.
Sometimes it is hard to get started or you need ideas for
how to help your kids in the kitchen. It might just be you need fresh ideas for
some kid-friendly recipes. That is why Kidliga and Function Junction are
offering these fun Kid Chefs Classes throughout the month of September and into
early October. The recipes and curriculum were developed by Kidliga as part of
an overall commitment to help children learn about healthy eating and what a
balanced meal is. The prepared meal can be served on the Kidliga children’s
line dishware that has been specifically designed to have kids learn about just
right portions on right-sized dishes and to show what a balanced meal looks
like. Then when the meal is done and children are ready for their bedtime
story, Sammie and Sax in the Land of Quinoa: The Search for a Balanced Meal can be
read together. There is no better way to learn than through hands on
experiences and entertaining books that have life lessons to share.
