We have found there are so many reasons to be grateful this year. Out of a very difficult decision to close down Livliga’s retail business, we have found so much fulfillment in giving our remaining product to individuals and nonprofits.<br /><br />In the final days of October we held a “One Day Give Away” that we ended up extending over the course of a weekend. Close to 700 people participated. Many of those individuals reached out to us thanking us for the opportunity and telling us how Livliga has helped them in their lives. Nothing could be more meaningful to us.<br /><br />Then in November we reached out to nonprofits to donate our product to help those they serve. Many of the nonprofits are those that we have worked with over the years, however, a number of you recommended new nonprofits that we were able to donate product to as well. As we had hoped, we got all packages out before Thanksgiving. We want to thank everyone for their patience as we got all your giveaway orders processed and sent. We hope you and those you share our product with will enjoy it for years to come. <br /><br />We did run out of the ⅓ cup and ¼ cup LivSpoons. For those of you that ordered the free giveaway 6 piece LivSpoons we did go ahead and send you for free a 4 piece LivSpoon original set rather than not sending you any of the LivSpoons. We called a few of you and you gave us the feedback that you would appreciate our sending what we had available so that is what we did. The original LivSpoons set is the cornerstone to our Livliga system and maps directly to our plates so it is a great set to have and wonderful to use for serving up right sized meals. If you plan to give it as a gift, it is packaged beautifully and ready to wrap!<br /><br />As we closed our retail doors at the end of October we no longer have any product available for sale. <p>Livliga is transitioning to a new business model. We are now only offering our product through <b>licensing agreements</b>. These agreements will be tailored to the specific interests and needs of each company. Dust off your pot and let’s make a Cuban-Style Beef Stew called Carne con Papas.<br /><br />When I told my friend Anna Norton, CEO of DiabetesSisters, that I was writing a healthy slow cooker cookbook, she told me about a traditional Cuban recipe from her mother, Caridad Tang. Anna had taken her mother’s recipe and adapted it for both the slow cooker and to make it more diabetes-friendly. I have been a follower and admirer of Shelby Kinnaird for many years. The partnership between Shelby and Simone Harounian shines through this book. It is clear they want to help people live life as their healthiest selves. They do this throughout the cookbook by sharing their expertise, experience and passion. Shelby and Simone put their personal and practical knowledge on the line for all of us. It is clear they have put thought and their love for us and good food on every page.<br /><br />First they share why slow cookers can be great for your health. This includes a section about “Eating Healthy with Diabetes” which is an uncomplicated overview of the basics. It is a great reference guide for those living with diabetes…and honestly relevant to all of us wanting to eat healthy.<br /><br />Then there is a section on “Golden Rules of Slow Cooking.” You are going to love this part! Again it is filled with common sense advice when using slow cookers. We all need to be reminded of these Golden Rules!<br /><br />There are many other parts of the book that help you be a better cook and a successful chef with a slow cooker. For instance, they guide you on how to make a balanced meal using the recipes in the cookbook. I can say I have prepared two recipes so far: “Sweet and Sour Scallops” (see photo above) which I served with brown rice and steamed edamame as well as a side dish, “Orange Carrots and Parsnips” which I served with roasted pork and steamed broccoli. The ingredients included are primarily fresh and focused on wonderful combinations of whole foods that are accessible at your local grocery store. Both were easy to follow, created attractive dishes, and were tasty. My true test is to share recipes with my family and if they say the recipes are a “repeat” then I know they have hit the mark. Both recipes were voted to be “repeats.”<br /><br />If you are looking for a slow cooker cookbook that also provides a great resource for those living with diabetes as well as those wanting to live a healthy lifestyle, this book is for you. <p>Our eyes make all the decisions about the food we eat. Our eyes send messages to our brain about the food we are eating…what it looks like and whether it looks like enough. These are visual cues. Unfortunately, our eyes can only perceive relative size and amounts. If we use large plates then it will take more food on that plate for our eyes to see the amount of food served up as enough. If we place a smaller amount of food on a large plate our eyes will perceive it as puny.</p>
<p>We live in a super-sized world. This means our frame of reference for portion sizes is super-sized too. We have no idea what right-sized amounts of food looks like. In fact, when you ask someone what a standard recommended serving size is for something like mashed potatoes, what do you think they will say? Most often, we have found, they will say it is a cup. Actually, the standard serving is ½ cup for mashed potatoes and all carbohydrates. This is always an eye-opener.</p>

And when we feel we are not getting enough, we will end up serving ourselves more and ultimately overeating. This is why we get stuck in the pattern of overeating and not living the healthy lifestyle we want.</p>

This time of year we can start looking forward to going to the pumpkin patch or apple orchard to pick our own for an adventure or go to the grocery store to fill our carts with locally grown late summer/early fall produce.<br /><br />Something my family loves is <a href="https://blog.livligahome.com/2013/11/easy-recipe-apple-butter-for-holidays.html" target="_blank">slow cooker apple butter</a> from the fresh harvest of apples I bring home. Last year when making the apple butter I had a lot of apple peels and got inspired to make use of them. In doing some research on spiralized recipes I realized I could come up with my own “Apple Peel Pancakes!”<br /><br />Apple Peel Pancakes are a great way to make use of leftover peels. They are whimsical to look at, easy to make, and tasty to eat. And, because of the peel used, they are packed full of fiber, vitamins and minerals. When melted add the peels and brown sugar to the butter. Sauté for 3 minutes, just until they begin to color. Remove from heat.</li><li>Sift together the flours, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt.</li><li>In another bowl whisk together the eggs, then add the buttermilk, whisk together, then add the oil and vanilla, whisk together again.</li><li>Add the dry ingredients to wet ingredients, whisking together. Do not over mix. A few lumps are fine. </li><li>Spray griddle with cooking spray. Drop batter in ¼ cup LivSpoon amounts onto the griddle. Distribute a 12th of the apple peel across the top of each pancake.</li><li>Cook until bubbles begin to break through, 2 to 3 minutes. Turn and cook about 1 minute on the other side, or until nicely browned. Remove and place on a platter in a warm oven while the next batch of pancakes is cooked. I have been scared of it and how it makes me feel. It is truly symbolic of the emptiness I can feel and can trigger my feeling that life might not be going so well. That is until a friend of mine said something very meaningful to me: “Hunger is just a state of being. You can control how you feel about it.” Somehow I had always believed that the “state of being” and how I felt about it were one in the same. By separating those two things I realized I actually could exert a control over my reactions in a way I never thought possible.<br /><br /></p><h4 style="text-align: center;">Here are some tips on how you can help yourself move through your hunger</h4><p><br /></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Be ready with a plan on how to address your hunger</li><ul><li> Have planned, health snacks ready</li><li> Think about when you want to schedule what you eat during the day…this will help you in communication with yourself about managing your hunger</li></ul><li>Acknowledge when you feel hungry</li><ul><li> Think about how long ago it was when you last ate </li><li> Is it time to eat your snack or do you want to wait awhile?</li></ul><li>If it is not time to eat, lean into your hunger</li><ul><li> Think about why <a href="https://www.peacefuldumpling.com/why-being-hungry-can-be-good-for-health-and-wellness#:~:text=%20Why%20Being%20Hungry%20Can%20Be%20Good%20for,%28or%20in%20another%20physically%20triggered%20%E2%80%9Chot...%20More" target="_blank">feeling hungry is a good thing</a>…believe it or not hunger makes your body healthier and it helps you think better! </li><li> Take a number of deep breaths…and smile…</li><li> Next let go of thinking about it…move on to thinking about other things</li></ul><li>Introduce new habits that help you move on from feeling negatively about your hunger</li><ul><li> Stand up and stretch when you are feeling hungry</li><li> Take a brief break and walk around your home or office</li><li> Move on to a necessary task at hand</li><li> Drink a tall glass of water or make a soothing cup of tea…sip and enjoy</li></ul></ul><p style="text-align: left;"><br />Hunger may never become my close friend but I can certainly can work with it. I no longer need to be afraid of hunger. I can acknowledge it, lean into it and learn to co-exist with it. I no longer need to stuff myself with food in order to try and kill it. Remember, hunger is just another message your body is sending to you. You can control how you respond to that message.<br /><br /><br /></p>

I have always welcomed and been willing to share my experience in hopes it might inspire and help others. One of my entrepreneurial tenets is that it is important to make time to help others. Others helped me the same way as I was developing Livliga.<br /><br />The help I have given has taken on many forms over the years. I have spoken to many people one-on-one in phone calls and zoom meetings and over coffee…lots of coffee. I have been interviewed for podcasts, like the <a href="http://thebeehivepodcast.com/2016/03/13-sheila-dietrich/" target="_blank">Beehive</a>. I have been interviewed for books written for entrepreneurs and starts ups, like <a href="http://www.themainstreetentrepreneur.com/mainstreetbook.html" target="_blank"><i>Main Street Entrepreneur</i></a> and <a href="https://3dprint.com/109940/makers-who-made-it/" target="_blank"><i>Makers Who Made It</i></a>. I have made presentations to peer groups, like the USDA/ MyPlate and the Denver University School of Business.<br /><br />What surprised me recently was when I found out Livliga and my start up story are now part of online business courses and and case studies for business schools. I first learned of this from my husband. He called me up after having facilitated an order for a customer. He often likes to ask people how they learned about Livliga. This time the customer said she had learned about us through a business course she had taken in Utah…the university had used our company as a case study. She was impressed with our story and wanted to invest in our product! I was very flattered and curious. So next I went online and found out we are also part of an online course by <i>MyEducator.</i> In fact we are part of <i>Lesson 3—New Venture Creation</i> and are featured in the chapter called, <a href="https://app.myeducator.com/reader/web/1480c/lesson03/po8oq/" target="_blank"><i>Knowledge From Personal Experience</i></a>. Google is amazing. I would never have known this if my curiosity had not been piqued.<br /><br />Lesson learned? It is important to be a participating member of the various communities we become a part of as a start up, entrepreneur, and woman business owner, as examples. And if you have been around long enough people start telling stories about you! Having our story told beyond our own blog and website is not only humbling but a great way for more people to learn about Livliga. And truthfully, we have more than one story to tell. There is the story of inventing the product but that story is not only personal, it is a story about the birth of an innovative product and business. Hopefully that story is already spawning the next generation of innovation to help people live healthier lives.<br /><br /><br /> <br /></p>
