Livliga Beehive Interview As a Case Study

You know you have been around awhile when…you are used as a case study in business school!

As a healthy lifestyle company we have had so many adventures and learned a lot a long the way. I have always welcomed and been willing to share my experience in hopes it might inspire and help others. One of my entrepreneurial tenets is that it is important to make time to help others. Others helped me the same way as I was developing Livliga.

The help I have given has taken on many forms over the years. I have spoken to many people one-on-one in phone calls and zoom meetings and over coffee…lots of coffee. I have been interviewed for podcasts, like the Beehive. I have been interviewed for books written for entrepreneurs and starts ups, like Main Street Entrepreneur and Makers Who Made It. I have made presentations to peer groups, like the USDA/ MyPlate and the Denver University School of Business.

What surprised me recently was when I found out Livliga and my start up story are now part of online business courses and and case studies for business schools. I first learned of this from my husband. He called me up after having facilitated an order for a customer. He often likes to ask people how they learned about Livliga. This time the customer said she had learned about us through a business course she had taken in Utah…the university had used our company as a case study. She was impressed with our story and wanted to invest in our product! I was very flattered and curious. So next I went online and found out we are also part of an online course by MyEducator. In fact we are part of Lesson 3—New Venture Creation and are featured in the chapter called, Knowledge From Personal Experience. Google is amazing. I would never have known this if my curiosity had not been piqued.

Lesson learned? It is important to be a participating member of the various communities we become a part of as a start up, entrepreneur, and woman business owner, as examples. And if you have been around long enough people start telling stories about you! Having our story told beyond our own blog and website is not only humbling but a great way for more people to learn about Livliga. And truthfully, we have more than one story to tell. There is the story of inventing the product but that story is not only personal, it is a story about the birth of an innovative product and business. Hopefully that story is already spawning the next generation of innovation to help people live healthier lives.

Spicy Green Apple Chutney

 A Great Summer Canning Recipe

Spicy Green Apple Chutney

Chutney is a great condiment to add zest and dimension to any meal. There are many varieties. The best is to make your own with fresh fruits from your local market or your own fruit trees. They tend to use less sugar than jams or jellies and are an additional way to make the most of seasonal foods to enjoy through out the year.

Green Apples on our Apple Tree

We have this young apple tree that has produced an abundance of apples. In fact, there were so many apples that we were advised to reduce their numbers by half! Of course, the Midwesterner in me could not just throw away the little green apples…I had to come up with something fun to do with them. So here is the result…Spicy Green Apple Chutney! Seems this is a very British thing to do…all recipes were from uk sites. The one I liked best and used as a basis for the recipe below was from Ball. It is actually yummy and will be great with meats.

Our little green apples required a lot of cutting and coring…we did not bother to peel them…which makes the chutney even higher in fiber and antioxidants.

Little Green Apples

Spicy Green Apple Chutney

Ingredients

  • 6 granny smith apples (about 8 cups), cored and quartered
  • 2 cups apple cider vinegar
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • ¾ cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 2 ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 ½ tsp dried crushed red pepper
  • 1 ½ tsp grated fresh ginger
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½  tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 ½ tsp  butter or olive oil
  • 2 cups thinly sliced shallots
  • 2 ½ ounces water
  • 1 ½ cups thinly sliced dried apricots

Directions

  1. Cut each apple quarter vertically into 3 chunks. Place apple, vinegar and next 7 ingredients in a stainless steel or enameled Dutch oven. Cook, stirring often, over medium-low heat 30 minutes or until apples are tender.
  2. Meanwhile, melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add shallots and water; cook, stirring often, 15 to 20 minutes or until shallots are caramel colored.
  3. Add shallots and apricots to apple mixture. Cook, stirring often, 15 to 20 minutes or until thickened.
  4. Ladle hot apple mixture into hot jars, leaving a little headspace. Wipe jar rim with a clean cloth. Centre lid on jar. Apply band, and adjust to fingertip-tight.

Makes about 8 - 8 ounce jars of chutney.

Classic Deviled Eggs - A Summertime Favorite

Friday, July 9, 2021

Classic Deviled Eggs with Shrimp Garnish
To make my Deviled Eggs extra fancy I top them with 2 tiny shrimp you can find in cans at the grocery store and then sprinkle with paprika

Deviled eggs are one of this family’s favorites. They are great as a side dish/appetizer for brunches, picnics, cookouts and backyard barbecues. They are great to bring along to a potluck. Summertime seems to call for a batch of homemade deviled eggs.

Deviled eggs are amazingly easy to make and only require a few ingredients. A little mustard and vinegar make this version sing with taste. And smoked paprika provides the ultimate umami experience. Check out the tip on how to cook easy-peel hardboiled eggs to make the process stress-free.

Ingredients

  • 6 large eggs

  • 1/4 cup light mayonnaise

  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 3/8 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon smoked paprika

Directions

1. Fill a medium saucepan with enough water to cover your eggs. Add eggs, cover, and cook until hard-cooked, about 12 minutes. Transfer eggs to an ice bath and let sit until chilled, about 6 minutes. Peel. Discard shells.

2. Halve eggs. Scoop yolks into a medium bowl. Add mayo, mustard, vinegar, salt, and pepper; mix until smooth. Scoop mixture into a zip-top bag and cut off corner. Pipe yolk mixture evenly between whites. Sprinkle evenly with paprika. Serve immediately.

Recipe Tip:

To make easy-peel hardboiled eggs follow these tips. First put the carton of eggs upside down on your counter. Leave the eggs upside down while you bring the water to a boil. Turn the eggs upright and then place them one-by-one in the boiling water. Cook them for 12 minutes. Place in an ice bath or run cold water over the eggs until they are cool enough to hold. Peel with ease.
