Have you heard about the new #SoberCurious Trend? Yes, it is for real. More and more people are choosing to go alcohol-free…at least for a period of time. Even Dr. Jennifer Ashton on Good Morning America chose to go alcohol-free for the month of January.
So what is the root of this Sober Curious movement? Like so many things in life, it is about living a healthier lifestyle. It is also about choice…our choice…to choose when and if we want to drink alcohol.

For many of us, especially those of us who want and need to be mindful of what we consume, we already know how alcohol influences us. There can be a whole lot of calories in alcoholic beverages. Those calories can add up quickly when you are having a night on the town or having a special celebration. Alcohol can also lower our inhibitions so we end up throwing care to the wind and drinking way more than is good for our mind and body! And for those who have had bariatric surgery, alcohol can be truly dangerous and toxic, affecting blood sugar levels and possibly triggering alcoholic addiction.

Giving up alcohol or choosing to moderate your consumption doesn’t mean you have to give up parties, having friends over, or enjoying a Friday night libation after work. Now it is easy to find non-alcoholic alternatives at bars. In fact, there are even sober free bars cropping up around the country that only serve non-alcoholic beverages.

There are so many delicious drinks you can enjoy alcohol-free. They can be easy to prepare and calorie-conscious. My husband and I have enjoyed developing our own versions of mocktails that are ridiculously tasty and terrifically refreshing. Below are some of our favorites. Try them, enjoy them, and get inspired to create your own mocktail concoctions!

Adventures of a Healthy Lifestyle Start-Up: How Livliga Got Featured in Six Books

Livilga is so fortunate to be featured and positively mentioned in a number of books related to health and wellness as well as entrepreneurship.  We are very honored that this has happened. In just the few years we have been building our brand and offering our product we have been mentioned in 6 such books. Remarkably, three of those books have been published just in the first half of 2019!

A number of people have asked me how this happened. Honestly, this is nothing we sought out or had any control over.  If there is one thing that I could look back at and say had an influence on our being considered is my being responsive when people made inquires about our product, asked us for samples for consideration, or even requested information about the company. I always made sure I made time to respond.

How Livliga Got Featured in Six Books

You never know where a chance introduction or networking opportunity will lead. That is certainly the case with Livliga. The partnerships we have developed and the relationships with professionals in the field we have had the opportunity to nurture have caused our product to be considered relevant in a number of ways. These touchpoints have allowed experts in the health and wellness world to understand the benefits and pertinence of Livliga to their constituents. To be mentioned and featured in such far-ranging books as The Pocket Carbohydrate Counter Guide for Diabetes, Finally Full Finally Slim and The Diabetes Cookbook for Electric Pressure Cookers is a testament to the relevance of our product for people needing and wanting to live a healthy lifestyle whether they are focusing on weight management, are living with a health condition, or want to maximize their quality of life.

Livliga Featured in 3 Entrpreneur Books

When the Grommet first introduced themselves to us they told us they were looking for products that were “disruptive,” meaning that the product would cause someone to see something differently or do something differently. They saw our product as meeting both those criteria. What our product asks someone to do is to change his or her behavior around food. We are a paradigm shifter. A few years later we are proud that the two books the founders of the Grommet have written—Makers Who Made It and How We Make Stuff Now—have both included Livliga’s story. Another book on entrepreneurship that included Livliga is called Main Street Entrepreneur by Michael Glauser. We have always welcomed the opportunity to share our story in hopes that it will be relevant and can help other entrepreneurs and their start-ups succeed.

Being mentioned and featured by others is not only flattering, it is validating. To be a young company that has been discovered and showcased as having been innovative, disruptive, and helpful to others, is not only gratifying but also motivating. We want to live up to the belief others have in us! It also allows those interested in our product to hear from professionals and experts about what we make and why they recommend it. This helps us grow and reach those who can benefit from our line of healthy lifestyle products.

Having been mentioned in so many books is an unexpected honor and benefit to our business. Networking with others and looking for ways to partner may help people discover and mention your brand. But first, you need to have a product that stands up to the test: Does it solve a problem? Is it innovative? Is it made well? Do people like it? Without these basics, there will be little interest in having it mentioned by others. We are proud of our product and how it has helped people. We are grateful that others in our industry have recognized what we have to offer and believe in it.

Facebook Live Recipe: Rotisseried Turkey Breast

Walt’s Lemon Garlic Fennel Rotisseried Turkey Breast

For some reason most of us think that turkey meat is only something you have at Thanksgiving, or maybe Christmas. This is partly because the grocery stores only seemed to carry turkeys during that time of year. A little known secret is that if you look in the freezer section it is possible to not only find whole turkeys but also bone in turkey breasts all year long. This is good news because turkey meat is not only good for us but also tasty to eat any time of year.

A roasted/rotisseried turkey breast is among my family’s favorite meat recipes.  This is because Walt developed a simple yet mouthwatering way to prepare a turkey breast using the rotisserie on our grill and simple ingredients on the turkey breast. The smell of the turkey breast roasting can’t be beat.

Consider preparing a rotisseried turkey breast for your next backyard barbecue to add a little variety. The leftover meat from the turkey can be used for a number of other meals too like diabetes-friendly Turkeyand Sweet Potato Hash with Fried Egg or RoastedTurkey, Dried cherries and Barley Salad and GrilledTurkey Plum Sandwiches. One rotisseried turkey breast can make a week of meals so much easier to plan and prepare.

Ingredients

1 9-lbs (approx.) whole turkey breast (bone-in)

For the outside of the Turkey breast
  • 2 lemons, zested
  • 2 lemons, juiced
  • 3 ounces of chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons whole fennel seed, ground
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
For the interior of the Turkey breast
  • 5 whole lemons, cut into quarters
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon whole fennel seed, ground

Directions

  1. Wash and roll the 2 lemons to soften
  2. Zest both lemons, and then juice them
  3. Mix lemon juice and chicken broth in small bowl (make sure they are in equal amounts, adjust accordingly)
  4. Add in the lemon zest, ground fennel, and garlic to the liquid mixture
  5. Wash turkey breast and pat dry
  6. Coat outside of turkey with garlic/fennel/lemon zest mixture
  7. Stuff breast cavity with lemon quarters mixed with additional garlic and fennel
  8. Let stand an hour, refrigerated.
  9. Place on rotisserie over highest heat for about 10 minutes; reduce heat and cook about 1 ½ to 2 more hours, until internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  10. Let rest 30 minutes. Carve and serve.

Cooking Tip:

  • For a 5-6 lbs turkey breast, 25 minutes at 430°F, and finish at 330°F for about one hour. Let rest 30 minutes. Carve and serve.
  • Or, swap out for 2 6 lbs Frying Chickens (serve 8), 25 minutes at 425°F, and finish at 350°F for an additional 65 minutes. Let rest 30 minutes. Carve and serve.

Healthy Grilling for Father's Day

Let's celebrate our Fathers.  For many of us Father’s Day is synonymous with outdoor grilling and the smell of barbecue.  It makes us think about all we love about summer.

When June comes around we all look forward to spending more time outside, enjoying time with family around a picnic table and hanging out with friends by the grill.  The challenge is to stay mindful of what we are grilling and serving as we look for simpler ways to provide meals in the summertime. Eating healthy does not have to be time consuming or complicated.

Preparing your meats for grilling. There are simple ways for us to add flavor to our proteins without adding unnecessary calories. For instance, Walt and I have come up with savory rubs that are made up of pure spices and herbs with virtually no calories, absolutely no fillers, no sugars, and that are heart-healthy, bariatric-friendly, diabetes-friendly, gluten-free, and sugar-free. We also offer tenderizing marinades that make for juicy, melt in your mouth, family-friendly options. These are all offered on our blog, always for free. Check out some of the choices below:

Recipes for Easy Sides. To make it a meal, provide a few different salads that can make serving up healthy meals outdoors healthy and tasty. The great thing about summer salads is that they can be made ahead of time, at your convenience, and then served up later when it is mealtime.  Here are a few of our favorites from our blog:

5 Fruit Salad

A simple meal hack.  Buy store-bought salads from pasta salad, carrot salad, or a green salad with various lettuces and then put them in your own bowls for serving. Help everyone measure out right-sized portions by hooking the recommended LivSpoon® (a stylish serving spoon with measurement) on the side of the bowl of the salads you are offering so people can naturally serve themselves appropriate servings.

For dessert. To make it super easy, offer fruit popsicles or get pre-made cookies out of the freezer like our original Rosemary Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Summertime meals can be easy, tasty, and healthy!
