50 Terrific Reasons to Exercise

50 Terrific Reasons to Exercise
For those of you who read my blogs regularly, you know I go to the local YMCA (the "Y") to work out. I love it. They have cardio machines, nautilaus, a running track, a swimming pool and all kinds of classes which are included in your monthly fee. I personally think you can't beat it. The challenge is to stay motivated to take advantage of what is available.

After the New Year we all tend to make the commitment and get back into the routine of clean living, which includes making time for exercising. Research shows this lasts for about 3 weeks. At this point we find it hard to sustain the healthy routine. This is when we need to remind ourselves why it is important to get up and move. I found this list of 50 Reasons to Exercise on a bulletin board at the "Y". I really like the list. All 50 Reasons are relevant to each of us. Some may be more motivating than others depending on our stage and state of life. Which ones resonate the most with you?

It was a real pick me up for me to see this list. It made me smile to see such a long list. It made me want to see if I could think of any other reasons that I could add to the list. So far I haven't. It is a really complete list! Can you?

I plan on printing the list out and highlighting different reasons to post various places around my home. I think I will keep one in my purse as well. We all know having a purpose is key to adopting and sustaining a healthier lifestyle. It is also true that we need reminders and motivators. Hope this will help you too.

Enjoy! And remember to Live Vibrant!

Starving Your Fears Is The Key To Change

Wednesday, January 15, 2014
I find I get motivation and inspiration wherever I roam on the internet. Recently I read a very truthful post from Kurt Smith that I wanted to share with you. Made me think about how I use food and make the same excuses. Fear can suffocate our motivation and dreams. Let's make this the year to feed our souls and starve our fears! Are you with me!?!

Feed Your Souls and Starve Your Fears

It’s that time of year when many of us are thinking about making changes. But it’s easy to feed our fears and convince ourselves that things can’t change.

You may have thought of resolving to stop smoking or start exercising or spend more time with your family. But then that little voice inside your head reminded you that you’ve tried that before and failed – so why will this time be any different? And having fed your fears, you chose to do nothing instead.

Dale Carnegie gave some great advice when he said, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

Do you want to know how to starve your fears? Take Carnegie’s advice, and “go out and get busy.” Take small steps toward change, and your fears will wither away.

Its All About Gratitude

I

I found this on a site called Reach. It reminds us that in order to get the most out of life we need to be present in it. It starts with be aware of all the ways we are grateful. This is something I find I need to be reminded of regularly!

Great Healthy Living Quote #33

Monday, February 25, 2013
There is a well known phrase in Japanese "harahachibu" which means-- eat until you are 80% full. It truly reflects an attitude about life. In America we are used to eating until we are more than full-- stuffed. Learning to feel satisfied and feeling better with less requires a different frame of mind.

Ways to Break the Cycle of Comfort Eating- #10 Mood Foods

New Mood-Management Strategy: Try Mood-Boosting Foods

Okay, sometimes food and mood should go together. It turns out it’s not just doughnuts that make us feel good. There is growing evidence that the Mediterranean diet, with its emphasis on fruits, vegetables and olive oil, is associated with less depression over time. A Spanish study of more than 10,000 people found that those who consumed a Mediterranean diet had a 30 percent lower risk of developing depression, even when the researchers controlled for other health habits and personality traits. Similarly, the consumption of more omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like salmon, tuna, herring, walnuts and canola oil, is associated with less depressed mood. Though the research is preliminary, the general health benefits of these diets make them worth considering.

New Year's Resolution—Keeping on Track

Friday, January 4, 2013

My New Year's Resolution is to commit to keeping on track with living a Healthy Lifestyle. I know what I need to do and it isn't just one thing. It is a way of going about my daily routine mindfully. I started a new food journal and at the very front I have outlined the daily steps I need and want to take to keep on track. This will be my personal guide and reference to remind me of each element required, that I embrace, to live vibrant. The rest of the book will log my daily commitments so I can be ever mindful and get into the swing of healthy habits. My List:

Mindful Daily Steps to Keep On Track

  • Track all food

  • Track all beverages (make sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water)

  • Track all exercise (make sure to wear your Fitbit)

  • Track your blood pressure

  • Track your weight

  • Right size all eating (prepare and pre-plan all you eat and use your Livliga dishware!)

  • Count calories (Livestrong.com is a great resource for info and calories on food)

  • Plan your menus (total calories for the day should be 1500 or less)

  • Think through lunch choices so food is on hand and calories are pre-thought

  • Have pre-washed and pre-cut veggies in the front of the refrigerator for snacks

  • Have 3 or 4 hard boiled eggs ready to eat in the front of the refrigerator for snacking

  •  Exercise 7 days a week (5 days should be at the gym for 45 minutes)

  • Get plenty of sleep (start getting ready for bed at 10PM with lights out at 11PM for at least 6 hours of sleep)

  • Meditate for 5 minutes at bedtime and first thing in the morning

  • Snacks to have on hand:
  •           Veggies- grape tomatoes, celery, steamed green beans, carrots, jicama
Fruits- pears, oranges, apples, berries, mineolas, grapes, bananas
Plain Greek Yogurt and/or Yoplait "100 calories" greek yogurt containers
              Hard Boiled Eggs
              Air popped popcorn

  • NO MORE GRAZING

  • NO ALCOHOL FOR 2 MONTHS

  • NO SWEETS FOR 2 MONTHS

  • NO POP FOR 2 MONTHS

  • HERE'S TO A FRESH START AND THE YEAR OF KEEPING ON TRACK!

Ways to Break the Cycle of Comfort Eating- #9 Find Your Sisters

    Wednesday, January 2, 2013

New Mood-Management Strategy: Find Your Sisters

People with similar problems created the earliest weight-control and other self-help groups because the medical field did not know how to help them. This is still somewhat true in the area of food and mood. You may find some experts to be a bit judgmental or lacking in empathy, but talking to other women (and men) who practice comfort eating can feel like a big support. You will feel connected and understood, and you may be able to share new techniques for mood management.

New Mood-Management Strategy: Make an Acceptance Plan

We sometimes use food because we want to eliminate negative moods quickly, but sometimes it’s better to accept the situation. Whether you’re feeling sadness, anger or anxiety, try to identify the source of your low mood. If it is something you can change, sketch out new solutions. For example, if a co-worker is annoying you, role-play with a friend about how you can be more assertive with the person. If, on the other hand, the situation is something you cannot change at this time, try to accept it. Breathe deeply and often. Take time to relax your muscles, especially your head, shoulder and neck muscles. Visualize a pleasant scene. It’s also a good idea to try to remember the big picture -- your values and goals -- and work on a plan of acceptance, rather than avoidance. You may, for example, have a difficult job, but you and your family need the income.

Ways to Break the Cycle of Comfort Eating- #7 Change Your Music

    Wednesday, December 19, 2012
New Mood-Management Strategy : Change Your Music
Music is one of the most powerful mood changers. In fact, researchers conducting psychological experiments often use mournful music to create sad moods in volunteers. Conversely, you can use your favorite dance music or popular music from your teenage years to boost your mood. Have fun while you create some upbeat playlists. There may well be times when you want to listen to the blues or a violin symphony to fully experience your sadness. But when you want to escape, turn on the cheerful music.
