8 Calming Foods to Naturally Help You Feel Better
Mint is a calming food to help you feel better

There are so many influences in our lives, not all of them good. Many of them can make us nervous, anxious, unhappy, or even depressed. What we eat can make a difference and allow us to feel calmer and more centered. The right foods can help us feel better and improve our overall health. Below is a list of 8 foods that have a naturally calming effect. We have included links to recipes that incorporate these foods that are available on our blog. Pamper yourself with nurturing foods that are naturally helpful to your mood and your health.

8 calming foods that will naturally help you feel better:

Mint—contains menthol, which is a natural muscle relaxer that can lead to a calming effect. Brew some fresh mint tea by growing your own in an herb garden.

Turmeric—in addition to being the popular spice of the moment, is full of curcumin, which is being studied for its use in promoting brain health and treating anxiety disorders. Golden milk, a hot drink with turmeric and spices, is a calming beverage that many folks are using to start or end their long days or try this Carrot Hummus with Turmeric you can share with others.

Orange—vitamin C is one of the vitamins that can help ease anxiety and promote a sense of calm, and there is no better source than oranges. Eat them whole or try one of these recipes that use orange marmalade.

Salmon is a calming food that will naturally help you feel better

Salmon—omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in naturally regulating dopamine and serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitters in our brains. So, a diet rich in them can really help balance your mood! Salmon is a great source, and this recipe for Pan-Roasted Salmon with Tomatoes and Capers is sure to become a favorite go-to recipe.

Spinach—magnesium is one of those minerals that are thought to help with feeling calmer, and you can find it in abundance in dark leafy vegetables like spinach. Try this fun family favorite recipe of Pizza with a Cauliflower Crust and Spinach.

Chocolate—dark chocolate, in addition to being most people’s comfort food, especially on the go, offers the added benefit of flavonoids, the antioxidant that can help lower blood pressure and anxiety levels. Note that we are talking about dark chocolate, at least 70% cacao content. Try making this guilty pleasure of Warmed Dark Chocolate with Popcorn…a perfect snack to munch on while curling up to watch a feel good movie.

Berries are a calming food to help you feel better

Berries—are naturally packed with antioxidants, which have been shown to protect your cells from stress and can help ease some depression. Any fresh or frozen berries can be easily incorporated into your diet, but we love this recipe for a kid-friendly and diabetes friendly Berry Delicious Smoothie Bowl.

10 Tips for Cutting Carbs by Livliga
The seasonal changes in our lives are always a good time to check up on our carb consumption. We can all benefit from limiting our highly processed and packaged carbs. Instead planning meals with high quality carbs that come from whole foods is much healthier for us, and honestly, more satisfying. Healthy eating is the best gift we can give to ourselves as well as the ones who we love.

Swap your food choices to healthier alternative

Here are 10 tips for cutting carbs as we focus on living life as our healthiest selves:

  1. Cook and prepare most of your meals
  2. Read the labels on the canned and packaged foods you buy and choose the healthiest option
  3. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time
  4. Track what you eat with a food journal or a convenient online app like Fitbit
  5. Include whole grains for the carbs you plan for your meals
  6. Choose high protein snacks like unadulterated yogurt, eggs or homemade smoothies
  7. When eating fruit choose whole fruits or canned fruit with no added sugar
  8. Be aware of quantities, measuring your food, especially your carbs, and serve up right-sized standard servings
  9. Swap out refined sugar with other natural sweeteners like apple sauce, honey, or maple syrup when cooking or baking
  10. Drink flavored waters instead of sugar packed sodas

Immunity Boosting Foods...Served Up for Your Health!

Friday, October 18, 2019

With the change in seasons it seems our immune system is more vulnerable to allergies, colds and flu, especially in the fall. There are actually a number of studies that show how there are more virus present during the change of seasons and that drops in temperature do make us immune compromised.

For instance, Yale University found a seven-degree drop in ambient temperature negatively influences your body’s ability to stop cold viruses from proliferating. Akiko Iwasaki, a professor of immunobiology at Yale School of Medicine explains, “Every time we’re exposed to infections, we try to counter this by secreting interferons, which are important for blocking viruses. We found that if you reduce temperatures from 37 to 33 degrees Celsius—98.6 degrees to 91.4 degrees in Fahrenheit—that change can dampen immune response and allow viruses to replicate more.”

Understanding that our vulnerability is real may encourage us to go get a flu shot but what are the other ways we can boost our immune system to fight off the cold and flu? This is especially important if we are combatting diseases like cancer, heart failure, and diabetes. What we eat and drink as well as the exercise we plan in our day and the sleep we get at night can all play a part in keeping our immune system strong.

There are certain foods and spices that are known to boost our immune systems. For instance, in the fall we can enjoy cooking seasonal vegetables that bolster our ability to fight off the cold and flu and help us live as our healthiest selves.

The family of vegetables known as “cruciferous” vegetables, named because of the shape of their flowers, have compounds called indoles and isothiocyanates that help reduce inflammation and prevent DNA damage, both critical for keeping us healthy. This group of vegetables includes: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy, arugula, Brussels sprouts, collards, watercress and radishes. Incorporating these into your fall menus is an easy way to combat seasonal illnesses. Here are some recipes from the Live Vibrant blog that should help inspire you:

Eggs are also known to help us fight off infections and specifically fight cancer. Eggs have choline, which reduces breast cancer risk. The good news is that eggs are back on the “okay to eat” list. It is so easy to add eggs into our diet from eating hardboiled eggs as a snack, frying an egg to top a salad or include in Sandwich. Our favorite use of eggs is in egg salads and frittatas. Below are a few recipes we wanted to share:

Another great way to boost our immune system is to drink tea. Chai Teas are known to be infused with a variety of herbs and spices that not only warm our hearts but also fortify our bodies. Consider making your own home made chai tea and then take the time to savor the moment. You deserve it! Here is my version of Chai Tea (served up in a Vivente mug, of course!) that is easy to make and tasty to drink:

Healthy Grilling that is Father’s Day Friendly and Diabetes Friendly

Healthy Grilling for Father's Day

Let's celebrate our Fathers.  For many of us Father’s Day is synonymous with outdoor grilling and the smell of barbecue.  It makes us think about all we love about summer.

When June comes around we all look forward to spending more time outside, enjoying time with family around a picnic table and hanging out with friends by the grill.  The challenge is to stay mindful of what we are grilling and serving as we look for simpler ways to provide meals in the summertime. Eating healthy does not have to be time consuming or complicated.

Preparing your meats for grilling. There are simple ways for us to add flavor to our proteins without adding unnecessary calories. For instance, Walt and I have come up with savory rubs that are made up of pure spices and herbs with virtually no calories, absolutely no fillers, no sugars, and that are heart-healthy, bariatric-friendly, diabetes-friendly, gluten-free, and sugar-free. We also offer tenderizing marinades that make for juicy, melt in your mouth, family-friendly options. These are all offered on our blog, always for free. Check out some of the choices below:

Recipes for Easy Sides. To make it a meal, provide a few different salads that can make serving up healthy meals outdoors healthy and tasty. The great thing about summer salads is that they can be made ahead of time, at your convenience, and then served up later when it is mealtime.  Here are a few of our favorites from our blog:

5 Fruit Salad
5 Fruit Salad

A simple meal hack.  Buy store-bought salads from pasta salad, carrot salad, or a green salad with various lettuces and then put them in your own bowls for serving. Help everyone measure out right-sized portions by hooking the recommended LivSpoon® (a stylish serving spoon with measurement) on the side of the bowl of the salads you are offering so people can naturally serve themselves appropriate servings.

For dessert. To make it super easy, offer fruit popsicles or get pre-made cookies out of the freezer like our original Rosemary Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Summertime meals can be easy, tasty, and healthy!

8 Great Tips for Right Sizing Your Food Environment

Friday, April 6, 2018
Our eyes make all the decisions about the food we eat. That is why our food environment has such a profound effect on us, and the decisions we make about the food we eat. Brian Wansink, Ph.D., former director of the brand and food lab at Cornell University, has shown us the power of our food environment on our decision-making through his research. From his research we see there are ways we can be mindful in how we set up our environment for long-term success. Not surprisingly, much of what is recommended makes a lot of sense--common sense. Below are 8 great tips for right sizing your food environment to help you live a healthier lifestyle and sustain it long term.

1. Choose colors in your kitchen and where you eat that are calming and non-triggering. Think about color in the kitchen and where you eat. Color influences our mood. It is important that we pay attention to the colors we use in our lives, especially around food. Think blues and greens rather than reds and oranges.

Choose colors in your kitchen and where you eat that are calming and non-triggering.

2. Trim down your dinnerware. Assess the size of your tableware. Measure your bowls and plates. Dinner plates should not be larger than 10 inches. More importantly the well of the plate should not be larger that 7 inches. All plates should have rims. Bowls should hold no more than 14 ounces. Ideally you want a bowl just large enough to accommodate 1½ cups for servings of foods like soup, pasta and certain cereals with milk. (Check out Livliga dinnerware for what right-sized looks like.)

Trim Down Your Dinnerware

3. Make the first thing you see in your kitchen something healthy. Studies show we tend to pick the first thing we see so strategically placing a healthy food will help us choose better. A bowl of fruit is an easy visual that is also visually appealing. This is also true in your refrigerator…put the healthy foods in the front of each shelf.

Make the first thing you see in your kitchen something healthy

4. Drink out of glassware that makes measuring 8 ounces easy. If we drink out of a large glass we are going to drink large amounts of whatever beverage is in our glass. This might not be an issue if it is water but the problem is we use the same glass for everything we drink. Our eyes automatically adjust to whatever size we live with. If we use large glasses we will over serve ourselves every time. Right sizing our glassware allows us to right size what we consume and gives our eyes an ability to adjust to right-sized servings. (Click here to see what right-sized glassware looks like.)

Drink out of glassware that makes measuring 8 ounces easy

5. Hide trigger foods and make them difficult to get to. We make over 200 decisions a day about the food we eat. A lot of those decisions are about what we will or won’t eat. Most of the time it is about resisting tempting foods we see. Hide them from our visual field and you don’t have to keep looping that decision making to resist eating something we really don’t want to eat. “Out of sight, out of mind” is true.

6. Serve food away from the table where you eat. It is easier and psychologically helpful to serve up in the kitchen. Foods sitting on the table while you eat are too accessible and trigger us to think we want seconds. Put as much food as possible away as you are serving up, or portion it into storage containers, so it is ready for another meal for another time and not visible from your table.

7. Set an attractive table and sit down to eat. Attractiveness has a powerful affect on our sense of satisfaction. Placemats frame your plate allowing the plate and the food on it to look attractive and appealing. Setting the table and sitting down to eat both help us be mindful that we are eating a meal. We can enjoy the moment and process of eating which contributes to our sense of feeling full and satisfied at the end of a meal.

Set an attractive table and sit down to eat.

8. Scale down your food. Bring smaller amounts into your house and repackage your food into 1, 2 or 4 servings before putting it away so it fits with how your are preparing and serving your food.

Diabetes-Friendly Turkey and Sweet Potato Hash

There is nothing better than leftovers to inspire creativity. Before I discovered roast turkey as a great year-round food, I relished the leftovers in order to make my favorite comfort foods like turkey tetrazzini and of course, turkey hash.

Diabetes-Friendly Turkey and Sweet Potato Hash in Cast Iron Skillet

Turkey hash is easy to prepare and is perfect for breakfast, brunch or a Sunday supper. My version is packed full of healthy ingredients that not only include high quality protein but also vitamins, especially vitamin C; minerals, like potassium; and antioxidants found in foods like garlic, onions and cauliflower used in this recipe. Providing comfort food that is also health promoting is particularly welcome during the colder months when we are combatting flu and colds. It nourishes our soul and our bodies. Below is my favorite hash recipe that is perfect for using up leftover turkey.

Diabetes-Friendly Turkey and Sweet Potato Hash with Fried Egg

Ingredients

  • 1 medium sweet potato, cubed and roasted
  • 1 ½ cups cauliflower, chunked and roasted
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 yellow pepper, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 cups cooked turkey, diced
  • 4 large eggs
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking Spray, olive oil flavored

Directions

  1. Prepare the cauliflower and sweet potato, placing them on a cookie sheet sprayed with cooking spray. Roast for 15 minutes at 375°.
  2. Next, spray a cast-iron skillet with cooking spray and add olive oil at medium heat. Add onions, peppers and salt. Cook until tender, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add garlic, paprika and cumin. Cook, stirring constantly for 1 minute.
  4. Add the roasted vegetables and turkey, stirring occasionally until the turkey is heated thoroughly, about 3 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, heat a skillet sprayed with cooking spray over medium heat. Add eggs and fry for 3 – 5 minutes, or until they are cooked as you like to serve them.
  6. Divide the turkey hash to serve 4. Top each serving with an egg. Sprinkle evenly with pepper and serve immediately.

10 Tips on how Livliga can help you Lose Weight

Before Losing Weight

We designed Livliga to help people live healthier lives. Not only does it help us eat healthier and in right-sized portions, but it can also help us lose weight.

When I was designing the dishware, I initially created hand-painted prototypes at the local Color Me Mine pottery studio. As we tested the prototypes at home, we found that we were losing weight. Just by right-sizing our portions we were losing weight. We weren't on a diet but we were eating much healthier and using standard serving sizes, the ones I  built into our plates and dishes. I lost over 50 pounds and my husband has now lost over 60 pounds. Our daughter, who was living with us at the time lost 25 pounds. All we were doing was using Livliga dinnerware.

12 Tips for Losing 50 lbs or more

Friday, June 2, 2017

About five years ago I went on a journey that ultimately caused me to create what is now known as Livliga, a healthy lifestyle company, focused on mindful eating through right-sized tableware and subtle portion control. It was my way of figuring out how to live a healthier lifestyle. In the process I lost 50 pounds and have been successful in keeping it off.

Livliga weight loss journey
My Before and After Photos when my husband and I both lost over 50 pounds

To lose 50 pounds or more requires a little different approach than if you only have 10 pounds to lose. Below are my 12 tips for losing 50 pounds or more:

  1. Have the long game in mind but break it down into small steps. You need to have the ultimate goal in mind but look at it through a daily lens. Planning is key from what you eat to your exercise to your nightly sleep. Creating healthy lifestyle routines will help you keep to the plan to reach your goal.
  2. Weekly menu planning and grocery lists help you stay organized and focused, and avoid bad decisions after a long day when you’re tired and yet still have dinner to prepare. The easiest way to stay in control of what you eat is to start cooking more at home. Include the others in the household in planning and fixing meals. Cooking can be fun, especially when the responsibility and time spent is shared with others…this includes children.
  3. Right-size your dinnerware. Our dinnerware in the US has grown over 51% in the past thirty plus years. The bigger the plate the more you want to put on it to make the plate look plentiful to your eyes. Don’t eat off a plate that is bigger than 10.5 inches and make sure your plates have rims. Better yet, invest in dinnerware that has been designed to make right-sized amounts of food look plentiful and also helps you measure the food you want to eat—Livliga!
  4. Set up a healthy food environment. Make sure the first things you see on your kitchen counter top or in your refrigerator and food pantry are healthy and support your diet. Avoid buying any prepackaged snacks. Instead have fruits in a bowl on your counter; place cut vegetables, lowfat yogurt and hard-boiled eggs at eye level in your refrigerator. In your pantry stock water-packed sardines and tuna next to your protein powder and PB2. Visually hide crackers, prepackaged cookies and snacks so you don’t see them automatically.
  5. Keep track of your food, exercise and sleep with photos and an app like Fitbit or Apple Health. Accountability is key. We have to keep our mind honest by taking the time to log our food, exercise and sleep. With out keeping track it is way to easy to forget and slip up.

    Fitbit for Tracking Healthy Lifestyle

  6. Work on Mindfulness which will help you get more in touch with your body and mind—YOU are the priority and SO worth it! Consider Tai Chi, yoga and meditation to help you become more present. It was shocking to me to discover how unmindful I was. So much of life we spend in an automatic mode and do by rote…especially when it comes to overeating. The best way to combat it is to be present in our own lives.
  7. Build in ongoing exercise and physical activity. Invest in an exercise tracker like a Fitbit—⅔ of your work out should be cardio and ⅓ resistance training. Make a goal for how much exercise and “steps” you want to achieve each week and schedule it in. It won’t happen if you don’t plan for it.
  8. Document your progress in photos, blogs and Facebook. Taking photos is a great way to share your success and take a moment to see how far you have come and how much you have changed.
  9. Find a buddy to join you on your journey. You are more likely to succeed if you don’t do it alone. Make friends at the gym, join a support group, or create your own. Having friends in your life that share in the desire to live a healthy lifestyle can make all the difference in your long-term success.

Find a Buddy to Do Exercize with
  10. Forgive yourself for slip-ups and remember tomorrow is a new day. None of us are doomed to fail but we are human and should not expect to be perfect. There are days we will fall back into our old, bad habits. You have to own it and forgive yourself to move on.
  11. Reward yourself for your successes. Create new rewards that are not food related and have a list that includes things you enjoy that don’t cost money as well as treats that do. Among my favorites—watching my favorite movie curdled up in my cozy clothes and then I love getting a massage. Both are delicious and give me the lift I need to keep on track. One doesn’t cost money, the other does.
  12. Acquire an Attitude of Gratitude. Bad moods and feelings drag us down and make it seem impossible for us to achieve our dreams and our goals. Gratitude actually makes it easier for all of us to do what we need and want to do, especially when it comes to weight loss. Keep a Gratitude Journal or use an app like fiveminutejournal.com to document your gratitude and be able to access it when you most need it.

When you have 50 pounds or more to lose and have struggled with losing weight for a long time, you may want to consider medical weight loss programs and/or weight loss surgery. These are important options to consider depending on your health issues, age and the place you are in your life. Discussing your options with your primary care doctor and a weight loss specialist, like an endocrinologist, can help you make the best decision for you.

How to Deal with Foot and Leg Swelling During the Summer Months

Friday, August 12, 2016

Nothing Fun About Swollen Feet
It is so interesting to me that more often than not when it gets hot outside, my legs begin to swell. I have always wondered—is it the heat that confounds my body or do I end up eating saltier foods in the heat of the summer? Or maybe it is that I need to be drinking more water because of the heat. In researching this conundrum here is what I found: Heat edema occurs when heat causes the blood vesicles to dilate while the person remains in a prolonged upright sitting or standing position. This condition is inconvenient and uncomfortable. It is also very common for a lot of people, particularly those that are older, pregnant, are menstruating or overweight.

There are things that can exacerbate the swelling like being in the heat, eating too many salty foods and sitting too long or standing too long. Being aware of these contributing factors may help to moderate them. We can cool down by getting in the shade or jumping in a pool. We can get up and move if we have been sitting too long or standing in one place too long. Elevating and massaging our feet and legs helps too.

When it comes to limiting the salty drinks and foods in the summertime, it seems a little more challenging. We eat more barbecue, potato chips and, of course, indulge in summer drinks like salty dogs or margaritas. I have found by making my own versions of our favorite summer foods I can cut down and even eliminate a lot of the added salt.

Even with knowing all the things I can do to help my swollen feet, I still struggle to keep the swelling down during the course of a day. That is when I decided to research what foods can act as a natural diuretic. It turns out there are many of them and a lot of them suit our summertime eating sensibilities. One of my favorites I discovered is watermelon! Who doesn’t love an ice-cold slice of watermelon in the heat? Other foods that act as a natural diuretic are lemons (think fresh lemonade with stevia), celery (think dip with crudité), tomatoes (think fresh cold gazpacho soup) and asparagus (think cold with a mustard vinaigrette drizzled on top). The best natural diuretic, believe it or not, is water. Lemon water, hot or cold, is a great way to add health and keep the fluids flowing as part of a daily routine.

Once I started designing menus that incorporated foods that are natural diuretics, along with being conscious of moving around more and using a lot less salt, my swelling has been virtually eliminated.

10 Signs of a Healthy Lifestyle

Healthy Lifestyle Sign: A Bowl of Fruit on the Counter top

The other day I was thinking about all the advice I have read about how to live a healthier lifestyle.  It then made me think about how that advice might actually look like in someone's home. What would it look like if someone had built more exercise into their life? Or what would someone's home have in it that would visually show a healthy lifestyle? What apps might someone have on their phone? I had a lot of fun thinking about the possibilities. Here is the list I came up with.

20 Non-Pill Popping Tips for Sleep

Friday, May 27, 2016

So many of us are affected by sleepless nights. We look for the easiest, simplest solutions. Frequently this comes in the form of a sleeping pill. Interestingly, a recent study was conducted that compared the efficacy and effectiveness of psychological versus pharmacological treatments for chronic insomnia disorder by reviewing randomized control trials between 2004 to 2015. What they found was stunning. Sleeping pills are not very effective long term and many can have very significant adverse effects. In fact, evidence showed that cognitive behavioral therapy (better known as behavior mod) significantly improved insomnia remission, treatment response, and key sleep outcomes, including sleep quality and wakefulness after sleep onset.

Insomnia is a prevalent and debilitating condition that affects over 60 million Americans, and with associated healthcare costs that are estimated in the range of $30 to $107 billion each year. This overall total could double when the additional $60 billion in estimated costs associated with lost work productivity are factored in. Finding effective treatment and long term solutions is very important. The American College of Physicians recently published guidelines recommending doctors put aside their prescription pads in favor of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia as the most effective and safest treatment.

As someone who personal struggles with sleepless nights I have developed a variety of routines, behaviors and rituals to help me sleep and extend the amount of sleep I get regularly. Below is my list of 20 non pill popping tips to help you sleep.
