Ways to Enjoy a Healthy Fall

Friday, October 9, 2020
The trees are changing and the temperature is falling. It smells like autumn outside. With the change in seasons comes the opportunity to also change things up in our lives. Each season has it’s own special foods, activities, and traditions. The challenge is to take advantage of the seasons in a healthy way and have fun creating or tweaking traditions so they support our commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

What are the best seasonal foods for fall? That’s easy…
  • Apples
  • Roots vegetables
  • Squashes like pumpkin
  • Soups
  • Chilis

For some recipe inspiration go to the Livliga Live Vibrant blog

What is fun is to seek out fun fall activities that make this time of year memorable. Here is a seasonal list of activities to get you excited and doesn’t require spending a lot of money and can be done safely…
  • Go pick your own apples
  • Enjoy a walk in the park
  • Rake leaves
  • Find a pumpkin patch and pick out your own jack o’lantern
  • Take a hayride

Each season it is always important to give yourself an emotion well-being check in. There are ways to give yourself some downtime, some time to re-energize and time to just pamper yourself. Ideas on seasonal pampering-
  • Movies perfect for fall viewing-
    • October Sky
    • You’ve Got Mail
    • Rudy
    • Fly Away Home
    • Practical Magic
  • Fix a cup of Chai tea and read a good book (treat yourself to a new book)
  • Get Your nails done with a fall color (is more appropriate...do it yourself)
  • Invite friends in your bubble over to carve pumpkins and enjoy some good company, preferrably outside
It can make a big difference on how we manage seasonal stresses if we spend some time thinking about how to manage them. Do some seasonal planning to manage inevitable holiday stresses and holiday overeating. Preempt your seasonal triggers with ideas like these…

Use the seasons as a way to focus on you and your health in the best possible way. There is only one you and you are worth every minute of focus, planning, and seasonally-designed enjoyment!

10 Tips for Cutting Carbs

Friday, July 31, 2020
10 Tips for Cutting Carbs by Livliga
The seasonal changes in our lives are always a good time to check up on our carb consumption. We can all benefit from limiting our highly processed and packaged carbs. Instead planning meals with high quality carbs that come from whole foods is much healthier for us, and honestly, more satisfying. Healthy eating is the best gift we can give to ourselves as well as the ones who we love.

Swap your food choices to healthier alternative

Here are 10 tips for cutting carbs as we focus on living life as our healthiest selves:

  1. Cook and prepare most of your meals
  2. Read the labels on the canned and packaged foods you buy and choose the healthiest option
  3. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time
  4. Track what you eat with a food journal or a convenient online app like Fitbit
  5. Include whole grains for the carbs you plan for your meals
  6. Choose high protein snacks like unadulterated yogurt, eggs or homemade smoothies
  7. When eating fruit choose whole fruits or canned fruit with no added sugar
  8. Be aware of quantities, measuring your food, especially your carbs, and serve up right-sized standard servings
  9. Swap out refined sugar with other natural sweeteners like apple sauce, honey, or maple syrup when cooking or baking
  10. Drink flavored waters instead of sugar packed sodas

Why Livliga Works—It's Eco-Friendly and BPA-Free

Celebrate Portion Control Dinnerware

When we were ready to manufacture Livliga products we thought it was important to provide a product that in its very structure and material was healthy for people to use. It has never made sense to us at Livliga that people are asked to live healthier lives but the tools being provided to them are made of materials that do not promote health, quite the opposite, and in fact, are not eco-friendly or BPA-free.

Livliga is FDA Approved
Our dishware is made of porcelain. This is a material of the earth. It is important to point out that porcelain is a durable material that will wear well and last. The energy used to create our dinnerware is offset by the longevity of its use.  We use non-toxic colors that are both cadmium and lead free and exceed FDA standards. We certify each lot of our product every time we manufacture. We meet the highest standards.

Livliga is compliant with Prop 65
Not only is our product made of health-supporting materials, it can also be used safely in a microwave and can be put in a dishwasher without worry of degradation, as can be seen with plastics. Because we are not made of plastic we are considered BPA-free. What is it about plastic that makes it harmful to our health? Here is what Harvard Medical School says, “Studies have found that certain chemicals in plastic can leach out of the plastic and into the food and beverages we eat. Some of these chemicals have been linked to health problems such as metabolic disorders (including obesity) and reduced fertility. This leaching can occur even faster and to a greater degree when plastic is exposed to heat. This means you might be getting an even higher dose of potentially harmful chemicals simply by microwaving your leftovers in a plastic container.” What is significant to point out here is that this statement encompasses all plastics, including those designated as BPA-free. Current studies are highlighting that all plastics leach, including BPA-free plastics. In a recent article in Live Science it was stated, “Worries over bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical commonly found in plastics, have led to a surge in BPA-free products. But now, a new study suggests that the chemicals replacing BPA may also be cause for concern. The study found that, among U.S. children, exposure to two common chemicals used in place of BPA — called bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) — is linked with an increased risk of obesity. Both BPS and BPF are similar in structure to BPA and can be found in some types of plastic, canned goods and other products.” Not only have BPA-free plastics been linked to health issues for children, they have also been associated with health issues for men and women, including infertility. The only way to protect yourself from the effects of plastic is to avoid your exposure to them, especially when consuming food. Livliga helps you do just that.

Livliga sources from companies that have a reforest program

The packaging we use for our dinnerware incorporates post consumer waste, and we also source from companies that have a reforest program as part of their renewable program.  All packaging is recyclable and we encourage recycling.

Livliga packaging is recyclable
Bottom line: Livliga is all about living a healthy lifestyle. The tableware we make and the information we share is to support each of our customers in living life as their healthiest selves. Our eco-friendly and plastic-free products do just that.

🍀 Celebrating St. Patrick's Day with Brown Soda Bread and Irish Stew 🍀

Friday, March 13, 2020
Livliga Irish Stew on Vivente Portion Control Tableware

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day can come in many forms. There are so many different ways we can have adventures. One of my favorite methods is to discover new recipes and learn about their origins. With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner I thought I would come up with an Irish meal to share with my family. I decided on a Brown Soda Bread and Irish Stew made with Guinness Stout.

Brown Soda Bread has an interesting history. There has actually been a debate about whether it comes from Ireland. According to Rory O’Connell, a famous Irish chef, in an interview with Epicurious, brown soda bread is indeed Irish. In fact, it dates back to the 1800s. It was common bread baked then that people could easily make without yeast and without an oven. Most people did not have ovens at that time. Instead they would make the bread with baking soda and bake it in a cast-iron skillet placed right in the coals of the fire. There are different variations of the bread depending on the season and where in Ireland it is baked. Caraway seeds and wheat germ are common ingredients. Dried fruit, like raisins is more common now but not back then. Here is a recipe I found and liked from Cooking Light that is easy to make, made from whole grains and tasty: Brown Soda Bread. Two tips from me on altering the recipe: remember, you can use white whole-wheat flour; it will make the bread a little less heavy and lighter in color. Also, you can always use substitute egg to lower the cholesterol and calories in a recipe. It will not change the consistency or flavor.

There are so many different versions of Irish stew. It all comes down to what you have available. Irish stew is an economical dish that historically varies with the seasons and what you can afford to put in the stew. It is traditionally slow cooked so even the toughest meats become tender. The most common vegetables are potato, carrot and parsnip. Originally the meat was probably goat but then was replaced by lamb. In the USA we tend to use beef. There is no wrong ingredient. The main thing is to let the stew simmer for a while. I also think adding a little stout can’t hurt and sure does help the flavor and sense of celebration on St. Patrick’s Day. A tasty recipe I found on myrecipe.com for an Irish stew using Guinness Stout is: Beef and Guinness Stew. Three tips from me on changing up the recipe to make it lighter are: change out the stout for Becks Light, it will lower the calories (by more than 100) and still provide the beer flavor without the bite. Instead of using tablespoons of oil, only use teaspoons and cooking spray; you only need 2 teaspoons for browning and flavoring. This will save you hundreds of calories. I tend to use olive oil, rather than canola because I find it has more flavor for the same calories. Finally, if you are not a turnip fan, you can replace them with potatoes.

As the Famous Irish Toast goes:

May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks,
May your heart be as light as a song,
And each day bring you bright happy hours,
That stay with you all year long.

Enjoy! And Live Vibrant!

Make Yourself Your #1 Priority

Friday, November 8, 2019
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. More and more people are living with diabetes (100 million people, according to the CDC). This includes pre-diabetes. And if we are not currently living with this disease we have family members and friends who are. Living with a chronic disease like diabetes requires a unique self-focus. To live as our healthiest selves it requires that we make ourselves our number one priority.  Our quality of life depends upon it.

Why we need to make ourselves our #1 priority. In order to sustain and manage our health living with a chronic disease we have to create an environment that supports us. We do this so we can enjoy our lives more and make the most of every day.  We do it so we have the energy we need to fulfill our daily duties. And perhaps most importantly for many, we do it because we have family and friends who count on us.

Why is it so hard to do?!? Often we let our responsibilities for our work and family come first. Sometimes it’s hard because our disease makes us feel lousy physically and mentally. For many it is due to the stress in our lives that overwhelms everything else.

What steps can we take to make tending to ourselves the number one priority. Create a rhythm or pattern in your life that includes regular exercise, healthy meals and enough sleep. Organize your home so it supports a healthy lifestyle from a bowl of fruit on your kitchen counter to an uncluttered sleep space with no electronics or television. Build in down time and some pampering in your life. Pampering can include treating yourself to mediation or an occasional massage to a walk in a park or a meet up with a friend. At the end of the day enjoy a cup of tea and write down the good things that have happened that day or examples of why you are grateful. Making yourself your number one priority includes tending to both your mental as well as physical health.

We need to give ourselves permission to make ourselves our number one priority. Anyone living with a chronic disease realizes that health cannot be assumed. And living as our healthiest selves requires work…a lot of purposeful work. When we make ourselves our number one priority we feel better, have more energy, can accomplish our responsibilities with greater ease, and can enjoy life much more readily.

Plain and simple…we should make ourselves our number one priority because we are worth it!

Immunity Boosting Foods...Served Up for Your Health!

Friday, October 18, 2019

With the change in seasons it seems our immune system is more vulnerable to allergies, colds and flu, especially in the fall. There are actually a number of studies that show how there are more virus present during the change of seasons and that drops in temperature do make us immune compromised.

For instance, Yale University found a seven-degree drop in ambient temperature negatively influences your body’s ability to stop cold viruses from proliferating. Akiko Iwasaki, a professor of immunobiology at Yale School of Medicine explains, “Every time we’re exposed to infections, we try to counter this by secreting interferons, which are important for blocking viruses. We found that if you reduce temperatures from 37 to 33 degrees Celsius—98.6 degrees to 91.4 degrees in Fahrenheit—that change can dampen immune response and allow viruses to replicate more.”

Understanding that our vulnerability is real may encourage us to go get a flu shot but what are the other ways we can boost our immune system to fight off the cold and flu? This is especially important if we are combatting diseases like cancer, heart failure, and diabetes. What we eat and drink as well as the exercise we plan in our day and the sleep we get at night can all play a part in keeping our immune system strong.

There are certain foods and spices that are known to boost our immune systems. For instance, in the fall we can enjoy cooking seasonal vegetables that bolster our ability to fight off the cold and flu and help us live as our healthiest selves.

The family of vegetables known as “cruciferous” vegetables, named because of the shape of their flowers, have compounds called indoles and isothiocyanates that help reduce inflammation and prevent DNA damage, both critical for keeping us healthy. This group of vegetables includes: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy, arugula, Brussels sprouts, collards, watercress and radishes. Incorporating these into your fall menus is an easy way to combat seasonal illnesses. Here are some recipes from the Live Vibrant blog that should help inspire you:

Eggs are also known to help us fight off infections and specifically fight cancer. Eggs have choline, which reduces breast cancer risk. The good news is that eggs are back on the “okay to eat” list. It is so easy to add eggs into our diet from eating hardboiled eggs as a snack, frying an egg to top a salad or include in Sandwich. Our favorite use of eggs is in egg salads and frittatas. Below are a few recipes we wanted to share:

Another great way to boost our immune system is to drink tea. Chai Teas are known to be infused with a variety of herbs and spices that not only warm our hearts but also fortify our bodies. Consider making your own home made chai tea and then take the time to savor the moment. You deserve it! Here is my version of Chai Tea (served up in a Vivente mug, of course!) that is easy to make and tasty to drink:

Enjoy! And Live vibrant!

More and more we are recognizing that the key to our success in living a healthy lifestyle is addressing our emotional health as well as the classic attention grabbers of portion control and exercise. They go hand in hand.

We are so excited to announce that the next ebook we will be launching this fall will be in partnership with Connie Stapleton, Ph.D., who specializes in helping people live life fully, free from the mental and emotional shackles of constant thoughts (and guilt) related to food and weight. Look for more information on this much-needed ebook in October!

To provide inspiration and helpful tips in positive support of our emotional health and weight management here are our Top 8 Blogs Focusing on Our Emotional Health and Weight Management from our Live Vibrant Blog:

De-stressing is hard for many of us to achieve. It is one of the cornerstones to living a healthy lifestyle. It is as equally important as eating right, building in exercise, getting the required sleep we need, and drinking enough water.

Finding time to both prepare nutritious meals and also find time to nurture our souls seems nearly impossible. How do we find the time? Perhaps part of the secret is in not thinking of them as separate activities or as mutually exclusive.

I have been in a long search to discover the secret to avoiding destructive eating habits at a restaurant. Recently my family has been eating more meals out in restaurants. I have found myself wanting to drift back to old, destructive habits. It is hard to break old habits. No one understands this better than I do. But it is possible.

Gratitude, in particular, has been shone to have a powerful effect on our outlook on life and our ability to manage the stresses and strains of our everyday lives in addition to the extraordinary circumstances of the holidays. The list of positive effects of gratitude is long. It includes improved heart health, reduced stress, improving our sleep, enhancing our relationships, fortifying our resilience, and boosting our self-esteem. It also helps us with our stick-to-itiveness, allowing us to keep to our exercise routine and other good healthy habits. It helps us with our overall sense of life satisfaction.

People who find they have mild to severe depression in fall and winter, when the days grow shorter, may have seasonal affective disorder (SAD) — sometimes called the winter blues. Women, especially those in their twenties, are most susceptible to seasonal affective disorder, but it can affect men and people of all ages, including children and teens.

I have been considered overweight most of my life. My mom put me on a diet in the 2nd grade! I have 3 children and a husband who have also faced their own weight issues. Our weight struggles challenged me to learn how to cook more healthfully.  One outgrowth of my journey to better health was starting a blog. Being thankful for a healthier lifestyle has been years in the making.

I find I get motivation and inspiration wherever I roam on the internet. Recently I read a very truthful post from Kurt Smith that I wanted to share with you. Made me think about how I use food and make the same excuses. Fear can suffocate our motivation and dreams. Let's make this the year to feed our souls and starve our fears! Are you with me!?!

I have a lot of issues when it comes to eating. I have come to understand I am not alone in this reality. As I focus on my Year of Intention I have committed to unveiling my eating quirks to look at them, understand them better, be mindful of them and ultimately switch things up so I can continue to advance in my journey of an ever improving healthy lifestyle.

Our emotional health is so important but not always easy to address when we may have deep-rooted issues that have become embedded in the way we approach our food and eating. Fortunately, there are many professionals today who specialize in helping us with our relationship with food and our weight challenges. Check out the people and businesses we highlight on our Community Commitment page on our website or talk to your primary care doctor to ask for a referral.

Guest Blog: Flourishing Emotionally as Well as Physically After WLS

Friday, August 16, 2019
At last! That stubborn weight you have battled for years is finally vanishing from your body. A physically healthier you is emerging and you are engaging more fully in life. You have more energy, you are taking fewer medications, and you are participating more wholeheartedly in a life you love! You are flourishing physically, getting around more easily, enjoying the freedom that improved mobility provides you, and resuming a more active lifestyle.

In order to best appreciate and fully utilize the improvements taking place in your body following weight loss surgery, you want to do all you can to thrive emotionally, as well. Feeling emotionally uplifted is accomplished fairly easily as unwanted pounds dissolve and you feel better physically. It is thrilling to see your clothes become looser and to fit into smaller sizes. The compliments about how amazing you look cause your spirits to soar. Your increasing self-confidence buoys your self-esteem and you feel yourself walking with your head held a bit higher and with a touch of a bounce in your step!

To ensure that your emotional health continues to blossom if you hit a weight “stall,” if you regain a pound or two, if you are tempted to return to unhealthy habits, or any time you have self-doubts, use these five inspiring tools to resume that “can-do” spirit of yours!

1). Talk positively about yourself. Be relentless in your commitment to halt all negative self-talk. Negative self-talk is inevitably going to happen. That’s not a problem. Allowing yourself to “ride that wave” can become a huge problem. Fortunately, it’s something you can easily (yes, easily) alter! ANY time you become aware of thinking or speaking negatively about yourself, say (aloud or to yourself), “Negative self-talk is NOT an option! I talk only kindly about myself.” Then literally restate what you just thought or said that was negative and make it kinder.

2). Look in the mirror and state a positive affirmation at least twice a day. Look into your own eyes and repeat the affirmation, out loud, three times, slowly. Not kidding. You’ll be amazed at what happens over time.

3). When you receive a compliment, do two things: a) say out loud, “Thank you,” and b) say to yourself, “I think so, too!” Even if you don’t believe it. Trust me. You’ll learn to love this.

4). Learn to set boundaries and then actually use them. Refuse to jeopardize your health. Say “no” to people, places, and things that threaten your weight loss, your health, or your self-esteem. Setting boundaries shows others that you value yourself.

5). Develop mantras to help you take care of both your physical and emotional health. Don’t feel like exercising? Use the manta “It’s what I do.” Tempted to give in to unhealthy foods? Use the mantra, “That’s not an option for me.” Fearful of hurting other people’s feelings by saying “no” to lunch at the buffet or “no” to their gift of unhealthy foods? Use the mantra, “My good health requires good healthy choices.” And the following mantra can be used any time to remind yourself of a very important truth: “My Health. My Responsibility. This Day. Every Day.”

Continue to prosper throughout your weight loss journey, a journey of physical and emotional health that lasts your entire lifetime! All the best. Connie

Top 8 Healthy Lifestyle Blogs

Friday, August 9, 2019
As we head towards the weeks ahead when school starts, fall activities set in, and we get back to the “normal” pattern of our lives it is good to remind ourselves of what it takes to get back in gear and sustain our healthy lifestyles. To help with that we thought it would be fun to provide our top 8 Healthy Lifestyle Blogs for some ideas and inspiration.

Let’s start at the beginning…

It is hard for a lot of us, but when it comes to our health, we need to be the first priority. What do you think needs to change first in your life to help you get started on the road to more health and happiness?

Our eyes make all the decisions about the food we eat. That is why our food environment has such a profound effect on us, and the decisions we make about the food we eat.

We focus so much on “dieting” and “losing weight.” When we talk about losing weight or even about weight management, it all centers on the types of foods we eat, like whole foods, or about the amounts of food we eat. Very rarely do we talk about the importance of the combination of foods we eat to fuel our bodies and live our healthiest life.

Do the words “portion” and “proportion” automatically mean anything to you? It took me a while to understand what they meant as well as why both are important to pay attention to when planning meals and menus as part of a healthy lifestyle. It is all about what a balanced meal looks like including the foods that make up the meal as well as the amounts of those foods that are best for us for eating healthy and not overeating.

I have so many bad habits. Some are harder to change than others. It is really about being mindless to what we are doing, a zombie-like state. I have had way too many repetitive, mindless moments. I came across a great article that reminded me NEVER to eat out of a bag. Pre-portioning is definitely the way to go before eating.

I have been in a long search to discover the secret to avoiding destructive eating habits at a restaurant. Recently my family has been eating more meals out in restaurants. I have found myself wanting to drift back to old, destructive habits. It is hard to break old habits. No one understands this better than I do. But it is possible.

When I sit down to eat a meal I tend to dive in and scarf the food on my plate. You would think I hadn’t eaten in weeks or that I was in a contest to see who can finish their meal first. It is a mindless habit.

Here’s to you and living life as your healthiest self!
